Info About Golf Tournaments

Whether you’re a beginner or an average golfer, one of your aims is to see how the pros play and going to a professional golf tour is the way to do it. Many golfers are content to watch the live action on TV but it doesn’t have the same impact as being able to watch it live. Walking around the course following the pros, seeing how they interact with the spectators and seeing how they handle the pressure playing in a major golf tournament, can give you lots of valuable information to carry through to your own game.

If you decide you want to go to a tournament, I’ve listed a few tips which might help you.

Buying Tickets – Most of the professional events allow you to buy your tickets on a day-to-day basis, or they might have a package deal for the duration of the event. You will usually find that a package will cost you far less than paying day-by-day, however this may not be feasible depending on the time you have. Note that a “Major” tournament is likely to cost a little more.

What To Bring – It’s important to find out beforehand what you can and can’t take with you. Some events will not allow any refreshments, chairs, cameras etc. to be brought onto their course, so you need to be prepared. You can usually carry a backpack as long as you carry items such as sunscreen, towels and clothing. Because it’s such a long day and you’ll be doing lots of walking, you don’t want to carry anything heavy. Don’t forget to wear comfortable shoes, and protect yourself by wearing sunglasses and a hat.

Accommodation and Parking – If you plan to attend the whole event, check with the club to see if you can park in their grounds, otherwise you’ll have to look at other areas. If you’re planning to stay in a hotel for the duration, then try to choose one not far from the course so that you only have a short distance to walk and can leave your car parked at the hotel. Some of the tournament websites will list hotels close to the course or ones which will provide a shuttle service to and from the course.

Golf Etiquette – Golf is well-known as a “gentlemen’s game” and as such should be respected. Spectators should never talk when a player is preparing to swing, should never take photos and shouldn’t try to talk to the golfer in between shots. Make sure to stay outside the designated boundaries and never touch a ball which has been hit into the gallery. Avoid standing in an area between the golfers’ miss hit ball and his next target. If you ignore the rules of etiquette you can see yourself expelled from the tournament without a refund.
